SHOP story
What started in 2013 as an idea during my time living abroad in New Zealand, has turned into a working project based in San Luis Obispo, California. It began simply, with only a passion for surfing and a handmade stamp...four years later, Roos Handmade Goods is still handmade, but skillfully developing Alaias and crafted surf tools for fellow ocean enthusiasts. After many hours spent in and out of the water, I feel I have developed a product that captures why water worshipers like me always go back to the soul of the sea and hope you join me as I continue to expand the Roos Handmade Goods.
The Alaia surfboard has a profound history deeply rooted in ancient Hawaiian surfing traditions. Originating from the Hawaiian term for a wooden board, "alaia," these traditional surfcraft were crafted from koa wood and date back centuries, preceding modern surfboard innovations. Characterized by their long, thin, and finless design, Alaia boards offered a distinctive and challenging surfing experience for native Hawaiians. In recent times, there has been a revival of interest in Alaia surfboards, with contemporary surfers and shapers reimagining these wooden boards as a homage to the cultural heritage of surfing, embracing simplicity, and fostering a connection with the pure essence of wave riding.
